FAQ's
(Frequently Asked Questions)

What makes a Date of sale? The date of sale, date of transfer or date of lease shall be the date on which ownership or leasehold interest passes to the transferee or lessee provided that within these regulations the date of sale or date of transfer or lease shall be deemed to be that set out in the Bill of Sale/Transfer of Ownership or return of the Lease Authorization form submitted to and recorded by USAHR.

What really is this DNA? Deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA, is the most basic molecule of inheritance and offers the most precise method of parentage verification. DNA is contained in almost every cell in the body, making it easy to collect using a non-invasive procedure. USAHR's DNA-typing program uses pulled mane hair roots.

What is the difference between blood typing and DNA testing? Blood typing is one type of test done on the blood serum to determine parentage and is 96.5% accurate. DNA testing is done with the white blood cells (WBC's) to ascertain that the foal is from that mare and by that stallion named in the pedigree. WBC's can be taken from a blood sample if properly stored and still useable. DNA testing is either 99.91% or 99.96% accurate. The two tests can be compared as testing apples with bananas.

Did WAHO think up this DNA testing? Actually AQHA began blood typing in 1982 and as early as 1988 began requiring DNA testing. The Jockey Club experimented using a different type of DNA testing than is now used but converted over to the present method of STR testing and now requires all foals be DNA tested.

Who else is using DNA testing? Almost all equine (horse) associations now require DNA testing to register foals. Cattle, dog, cats, camels, etc are also requiring DNA testing for registration.

What can/can't DNA testing prove? DNA testing cannot prove the horse is a purebred Arabian horse. DNA testing can only prove this foal came from this sire and this dam. If the markers counted at certain places do not match, then either the sire or the dam is not correct. Further testing can show who can be the sire/dam and who cannot be the sire/dam.

I need to know what is needed for embyro transplants? Embryo/oocyte Endorsement Certificate is the form required for the registration of a foal produced from embyro/oocyte implementation in a donor mare, not to be transferable without the proper Embryo Bill of Sale form, to be signed by the registered owner and/or lessee of the mare and the donor mare, certifying the date or dates when a donor mare was implanted with the embryo/oocyte ( mandatory three (3) days) and embodying the name, registered number (if any), description (including color, markings, brands (if any) and markings of all hooves of the mare). Carefully review the rules for the embryo/oocyte procedures and fees. See Rule 3, Section 3 for more on embryo/oocyte rules.

For exportation what is needed? An Export Certificate document is used from one registry to another registry and contains a check list of forms, DNA test reports and other information needed for one registry to accept an imported/exported horse for registration, an export identification form and the pedigree of the exported animal. See Rule 3, Section 5 for more of the rules on what is needed for exportation.
